Adding a new ship to the fleet is a time of great celebration, and Princess vessels, following nautical tradition, are launched with a ceremonial naming of the ship by a specially- selected godmother. Throughout our company's history numerous accomplished and celebrated women have named our ships. Here we present some of our most noteworthy godmothers who personify the grace, glamour and spirit of the Princess experience. Diana, Princess of Wales – Royal Princess. With all outside cabins and the first to feature an open atrium interior layout, she was a special ship, calling for a special godmother. As Princess Cruises was part of the venerable British company P& O, and with the name Royal Princess, who more perfect to name this special vessel than Diana, Princess of Wales. Arriving by train to the cruise terminal in Southampton, the Princess of Wales greeted company and government officials before moving to the specially- built podium from which she would say the words, “I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her,” before pulling the lever that would send the traditional bottle of champagne against the ship’s hull, officially giving the ship its name. Escorted by the Captain, the Princess of Wales then toured the ship, and met many members of the ship’s company. During the exchange of gifts, she presented the Captain and crew with a beautiful ceremonial sword to commemorate the occasion. Audrey Hepburn – Star Princess. With a princess- like persona, and admired around the world, how fitting that this iconic actress was godmother to our first Star Princess. Under beautiful, sunny Florida skies, the ever chic actress, known for her iconic roles in such beloved films as “Roman Holiday” and “Breakfast at Tiffanys,” Ms. Hepburn took to the stage looking distinctively nautical. The selection was especially fitting because the festivities took place in Greece, which was the birthplace of the Mother’ Day holiday. The famous mother/daughter duos included Florence Henderson, who played “Carol Brady” on The Brady Bunch, and her TV daughter Susan Olsen, aka “Cindy Brady,” and Marion Ross, the beloved “Marion Cunningham” from the international hit, Happy Days, and her TV daughter, Erin Moran, aka “Joanie Cunningham.” The naming of Emerald Princess took place on a warm afternoon followed by a blessing by Greek Orthodox priest and a colorful performance by traditional Greek dancers.
